Let’s get the meaning straight…

One of my pet hates is when native English speakers (who have no excuse for making this mistake – no “I didn’t know or didn’t understand” use the term “gay” as a derogatory term.

Saying things like “that’s so gay” for something being bad is just so unnecessary? Why do we need to associate homosexuality with negativity, with being wrong, with being bad? Would you go around describing bad things as “that’s so black” or “that’s so Asian”? This is the same.

You might think its something minor and mild and that I’m overreacting – but its the sub-conscious association of “gay” that continues to be associated with bad/ negative things in peoples’ minds and as long as this is around there is no equality between our hetero and homo brethren.

So please stop using the word “gay” in your daily vocabulary as a derogatory term. Please.

Though I don’t necessarily always agree with all of Stonewall’s campaigns – this is definitely one I can side with:

  1. “I don’t know it’s your shitty kid, you fucking tell him…two guys want to get married but you don’t want to talk to your ugly kid for 5 minutes”.

What do you think?
