A couple of years ago I was introduced to a Canadian electronic music duo called “Purity Ring” and fell in love immediately. The band consists of Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (instrumentals) and they are apparently originally from Edmonton. And no, I don’t just love them because they’re Canadian, their music is just hauntingly beautiful.
Back in 2012 they had released “Shrines” and that was my album on repeat for months, so now I’m very terribly super mega excited that they have been working on a new album called “Another Eternity” which is due for release on the 3rd of March AND are going to be in London again in April performing live on the 30th – OBVS I already have my tickets…
I’m embarrassed to admit it has taken me so long to discover the wonderful Kenyan group Sauti Sol, but better late than never right?
Fun, catchy, happy, feel good. Beautiful voices, perfect harmonies. Awesome video. What’s not to love?
Sauti Sol is a Kenyan afro-pop band formed in Nairobi by vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Delvin Mudigi in 2005. Initially an a capella group, guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined before they named themselves Sauti.
Sauti Sol released their debut studio album Mwanzo on 4 August 2009, to critical acclaim. Their second studio album, Sol Filosofia, was released on 25 February 2011, earning the group a number of accolades and nominations in the process. On 18 June 2012, the band released a self-titled extended play in collaboration with South African rapper and record producer Spoek Mathambo.
Their third studio album, titled Live and Die in Afrika, is still in production, under their imprint label Sauti Sol Entertainment, and is set for release soon.
My ultimate guilty obsession in the world of music has got to be Die Antwoord. I’ve seen them live twice – in Barcelona and in London and can’t wait to go see them again next January when they come back to London again.
I have been fascinated by this duo for ages now – and they just always deliver. From the original Zef Side and Enter The Ninja videos that started it all to Rich Bitch, Fatty Boom Boom, I Fink U Freeky and the amazing Baby’s on Fire – Yolandi and Ninja just always deliver.
And this past week they released their latest music video – for the track “Ugly Boy” from recent new album “Donker Mag” – featuring cameos from Cara Delevigne, Jack Black, Flea, Marilyn Manson, and Dita Von Teese. I think this might be the first and only time ever I envy Cara Delevigne.
